New accessible housing development underway at BullStreet > Columbia Business Report


Midtown at Bullstreet, a new 90-unit accessible rental apartment complex, will soon be under construction in the BullStreet district of downtown Columbia.

Midtown at BullStreet will cover approximately two acres located adjacent to the recently dedicated Page Ellington Park, a new 20-acre urban park. The development will include 18 two-bedroom townhouses and 72 one-, two- and three-bedroom garden-style units. On-site facilities will include a community hall, computer center, exercise room, playground and gazebo.

Accessible housing is defined as affordable housing for people who earn around the median income of an area. No subsidy is involved.

Connelly Development LLC of Lexington is the developer of the Midtown project. The company’s president, Kevin Connelly, has more than 25 years of experience developing affordable housing in the Carolinas. He is also president of Connelly Builders Inc., a general development contractor.

Parks Player Architecture of Greenville is the development architect and Columbia’s Civil Engineering provides civil engineering and surveying services.

Completion of Midtown at BullStreet is scheduled for fall 2023.

Midtown will benefit BullStreet as it will expand the variety of housing prices available in the development, said Chandler Cox, BullStreet project manager for master developer Hughes Development Corp.

“We’re really excited to have Kevin and the team at Connelly Builders working on a project at BullStreet. They’ve completed a number of projects across the state and have an excellent reputation for quality work,” Cox said. “We were approached by Kevin and his team when they were researching possible sites, and their vision of adding attainable housing to this neighborhood was something we’ve always wanted to do at BullStreet. It will complement the offerings and complement the vision of BullStreet.”

City of Columbia officials said adding accessible housing to the BullStreet mix is ​​crucial to the city’s future development.

“Accessible housing in the BullStreet district helps the city meet one of our most pressing needs, as it helps keep workers in Colombia for the benefit of our workforce,” said the mayor of Columbia, Daniel Rickenman. “Workers are leaving Columbia because the cost of housing is too high. Having accessible housing in one of our most prominent developments is good for our city and our workforce and fulfills a critical need.
