The Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) is designed to inspire the next generation of business leaders, disruptors and change-makers, helping to create a new generation of business-savvy New Zealanders. Senior high school students participate in the program to start and run their own small business, supported by teachers, schools, local organizations and delivered by the Hawke’s Bay Chamber of Commerce.
Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market (HBFM) has been around for over 20 years, celebrating local producers and providing a way to reach the public. HBFM has supported YES since 2001, enabling YES teams to market their innovative product offerings and inviting their community to celebrate their success.
All YES teams that participate in the HBFM experience are supported by a wonderful group of people, including Francesca Arlidge, YES HB Regional Coordinator for the Hawke’s Bay Chamber of Commerce, business mentors, teachers, whanau and their community local business.
Market Manager Emma Waerea speaks about the integral nature of YES’s participation in the market: “We really appreciate being able to host this fantastic event and being able to support the students of the Young Enterprise Scheme”. Among the products and services offered, Emma says they are, “increasingly [in]
quality every year, so we can’t wait to see what this year’s students have in store for us.”
Francesca Arlidge, YES HB Regional Coordinator, shares her excitement for students at “the opportunity for teams to network in a public setting, gain real-world sales experience, and effectively determine what other students from the region have been busy creating! As a YES Alumni, Francesca also shares “how important it is for our community to get involved in supporting these teams”. She points out that “nearly 7 months of hard work went into developing their product/service”.
The first YES Market Day will take place at Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market in Waikoko Gardens at Tomoana Showgrounds on Sunday August 14, doors open at 8:30am. Teams are lucky to have another sale opportunity the following weekend at the Napier Urban Farmers Market on August 20 in Clive Square. Come and celebrate this new generation of businessmen, selling alongside the usual merchants of Hastings Market, there will be something for everyone.
